The consumer price index (CPI) rose 1.5 percent in December, while factory gate prices as measured by the producer price index (PPI) surged 10.3 percent, although both rates edged down from the November figures, according to official data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Wednesday.

The mother of a Chinese student killed in Japan in 2016 was awarded more than 696,000 yuan ($109,200) in a lawsuit against her daughter's former roommate on Monday after a court ruled the defendant played a role in the young woman's death.

The compensation included 496,000 yuan for Jiang Qiulian's financial losses and 200,000 yuan for her mental anguish over the death of her daughter, Jiang Ge. It also covered some lawsuit-related expenses, according to the ruling by the Chengyang District People's Court in Qingdao, Shandong province.

据山东省青岛市城阳区人民法院宣判，该笔赔偿金包括赔偿原告江秋莲各项经济损失496000元及其女儿江歌被害所致的精神损害抚慰金200000元，以及全部案件受理费。

Liu Nuanxi, the roommate, was ordered to pay Jiang Qiulian within 10 days if neither party appeals to a higher court.

若原被告双方均不提出上诉，江歌的室友刘暖曦（曾用名：刘鑫）将于十日内支付江秋莲赔偿款。

A top Chinese consumer group has called for a boycott of a KFC meal promotion, saying it encourages food waste.

近日，中国消费者协会发文称，肯德基的一项套餐促销活动诱导食物浪费，应当抵制。

The China Consumers Association (CCA) says the promotion sent some customers into a buying frenzy.

中消协表示，肯德基此举引发了部分消费者的抢购。

KFC launched the promotion last week with Pop Mart, a Chinese toy maker known for its mystery boxes.

上周，肯德基与知名国产盲盒销售商泡泡玛特联合推出一款联名款盲盒套餐。

KFC "used limited-edition blind box sales to induce and condone consumers' irrational and excessive purchase of meal sets, which goes against public order, good customs and the spirit of the law", the state-affiliated CCA said in a statement.

中消协称，肯德基利用限量款盲盒销售手段，诱导并纵容消费者不理性超量购买食品套餐，有悖公序良俗和法律精神。

That led one customer to spend 10,494 yuan (£1,202; $1,649) on more than 100 of the meals in one go to collect the toys, while people also paid others to purchase meals for them, or just threw them away, the statement added.

Canteen collapse in Chongqing

Sixteen people were killed and 10 injured, one critically, after a blast rocked a canteen of a subdistrict office in Wulong District, southwest China's Chongqing Municipality at noon Friday.

The accident took place at 12:10 p.m. as suspected gas leakage triggered the explosion and caused the collapse, trapping 26 people inside.
