Dear Jim,

Awesome to hear you're working on a proposal! Remember the song "Under the Sea" from The Little Mermaid we watched together? Well, these days it's less magical and more of a microplastic nightmare in our oceans.

So, if you haven't come up with a topic yet, I'd suggest focusing on ocean conservation, given that today is World Ocean Day. Our seas are in serious trouble – from plastic waste to overfishing and dying coral reefs. Maybe you can touch upon ways to reduce ocean pollution, like pushing for global bans on microbeads in cosmetics and switching to safer, natural alternatives. 

So we've got to act fast to clean up the homes of our ocean friends, otherwise nobody will be "living in a pineapple under the sea" anymore.

Dear Jim,

Taking part in this global discussion is such an honor. One issue I feel strongly about is climate action. Every year there are reports of record-breaking heat and worldwide suffering due to climate change. Nations around the world, including China, have imposed regulations and put goals in place to improve their national standards and, in turn, the global impact. However, we still need more support for developing nations. Promoting more green technology, including electric vehicles and green aviation can make a huge difference. In addition, with increased support for developing nations – as well as regulations holding other countries accountable for excessive emissions – I believe globally we can truly make a significant mark and perhaps put the Earth on a better track for the future generation, because after all, the world belongs to them.

It's that time of year again—the National College Entrance Examination, or Gaokao. This year, have you once again enlisted a new batch of students to help write letters for us, your foreign friends?

又到了一年一度的高考。今年，你是否又请了一批高考生们帮忙，给我们这些外国朋友写小作文呢？

Tell me, my dear friend—after all these years, how is it that you still haven't learned to write a letter in English?

话说，我亲爱的朋友，这么多年过去，你怎么还是不会用英文写信呢？

After all, since 1995, you've been the perennial protagonist of the Gaokao English essay, relying on generation after generation of examinees to write on your behalf. Thirty years ago, you first asked Gaokao candidates to help you pen a letter—an invitation to Peter from the UK for a picnic at People's Park.

毕竟，从1995年开始，你就成为了高考英语作文的常驻主人公，委托一届又一届考生帮忙写信。三十年前，你第一次请高考考生们替你写信，当时是邀请来自英国的Peter去人民公园野餐。

Over the years, your life has grown increasingly international, and your circle of foreign friends has expanded. You’ve traveled abroad, volunteered overseas, helped foreign friends find housing in China, and time and again introduced them to your hometown.

So, even though your English hasn't improved much, your network of friends now spans the globe.

因此，虽然你的英文不好，但你的朋友圈已经遍布全球。

Perhaps that's also the hope the Gaokao holds for every student: to gain the ability to communicate with the world, to become active ambassadors of cultural exchange, and to take on the responsibility of fostering global understanding.

或许，这也正是高考对于每一位高考学子的希冀：掌握与世界对话的本领，成为文明交流互鉴活跃的使者，肩负起促进全球相互理解的责任。

It was with this same belief that I chose to learn Chinese, to come to China to study and work, and to become a journalist in international communication. Each day, I deepen my understanding of China—and help more people around the world see a China that is kind, respectable, and full of charm.
