Chinese delivery giant Meituan said its on-demand delivery business hit a record high over the weekend, with more than 120 million orders placed in a single day — the highest volume since its founding in 2010.

中国外卖巨头美团表示，上周末其即时配送业务创下历史新高，单日订单量突破1.2亿单，这是该公司自2010年成立以来的最高纪录。

South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported that food deliveries made up the bulk of yesterday’s transactions, with 100 million orders or 83 per cent of the total.

《南华早报》报道称，7月5日的订单主要为食品配送，共接到了1亿份订单，占总订单数的 83%。

It added that the surge briefly overwhelmed Meituan’s servers, causing temporary outages in some areas, the company said in a statement. Services resumed within hours after emergency safeguards were triggered.

该公司在一份声明中表示，此次流量激增曾一度使美团的服务器不堪重负，导致部分地区出现短暂服务中断。但在紧急保障措施启动后，服务在数小时内得以恢复。

The spike in volume comes as China’s e-commerce giants, including Alibaba and JD.com, intensify efforts to carve out a bigger slice of the instant delivery market — a sector Meituan has long dominated.

Eight individuals connected to the children's abnormal blood lead case at a kindergarten in Tianshui city, Northwest China's Gansu province, have been placed under criminal detention after investigations revealed that the kindergarten illegally added inedible painted pigments to children's foods, Xinhua News Agency reported on Tuesday. 

据新华社7月8日报道，在甘肃省天水市一所幼儿园发生的儿童血铅异常事件中，8名相关人员已被刑事拘留。调查发现，该幼儿园在儿童食品中非法添加了不可食用的颜料。

The joint investigation team in Tianshui city released on Tuesday a notice on the case, China Central Television reported. 

央视新闻报道，7月8日，天水市联合调查组公布了这一事件的调查结果。

The investigation revealed that the kindergarten's head, surnamed Zhu, and its investor, surnamed Li, instructed kitchen staff to purchase decorative paint online, dilute it, and use it in preparing some food items.

经侦查，幼儿园园长朱某、投资人李某同意该园后厨人员通过网络平台购买彩绘颜料，稀释后用于部分食品制作。

In the early hours of Thursday, the police seized the remaining hidden paint. Testing confirmed that the seized paint contained lead and the paint was clearly labeled as inedible on its packaging.

According to a notice, as of 10 pm on Monday, all 251 children at Peixin Kindergarten have been tested. According to blood lead standards, 233 children were found to have abnormal blood lead levels, while 18 were within the normal range.

截至7日晚10时，培心幼儿园的251名幼儿已全部检测。根据血铅标准认定，血铅异常233人、正常18人。

Currently, the public security authorities have placed Zhu and Li, and six others under criminal detention on suspicion of producing toxic and harmful food.

After the incident happened, the National Health Commission and the National Disease Control and Prevention Administration on Friday dispatched experts to Tianshui to guide the on-site handling of the incident.
